An unpleasant mirror is held up before our faces when we are eonfronted with acomplex of problems we would much rather do without. And this force of being, this energy, is essential and antisocial, because none of us are alike, although the intention to the contrary never fails. This reflects the fact that when Bendel moved to New York his work became more associated with memories of, and feelings about, his island home rather than with direct visual perception of literal subject matter.
